We deliberately looked at CD and DVD covers from the Indie/Electra pop genre because this is the genre of our chosen song and video. However we did look at other genres too. We found the simple title of song and artist really effective. This is because there is not much going on so the main focus is on the artist. The covers for Coldplay, Snow Patrol and White Lies are examples of this as it has just the name of the album or song and then the artist. It gives off the importance of the song, that they don't need any decorative detail to help sell the song. The cartoony decoration on some covers we thought looked really attractive to the eye as it catches attention; people would want to look at it closely in more detail. MGMT's and Death Cab for Cutie's album covers are really colourful and match the genre of each of the bands music. We will have to take into consideration of colours and decorations we use that represent our genre. The way the covers do not have pictures of the band is also very effective, it's almost a secret of what the artists look like - or maybe again pictures don't need to be used to sell the CD/DVD. We will incorporate this idea into our cover, as not having a picture of the band on the front makes it look like the Indie genre.

Problems we have faced so far:

When filming the “Sparklers” scene, none of our friends would be convinced to mime the words “Higher” to the song so we may have to do that ourselves (Chloe and I).
Keeping the timings to the same time that we have previously predicted, however the changes we have made are even more affective.

We decided that to help us research that we would watch previous years music videos ranging from the highest and lowest marks to see whats good and whats not. After watching these videos we found certain issues which we should consider when making our own, for example: Continuity and being able to understand the storyline as on some music videos we found it hard to understand what was going on. We need to take this into special consideration as we dont want ours to come across as music just placed onto a video. Especially as ours has a fairly basic storyline with not much structure to it.

Scenes for our music video

In our music video we have decided we will be using a hand held camera the majority of the time as we would like to give off the impression of a 'home made' video. We also feel that by using a hand held camera you can capture more of whats happening and the audience can feel more involved. On the other hand, we will have to take into consideration that we dont want it to look too shaky and make the audience feel motion sick!

The video will start off with shots of people walking as this will be more of an establishing scene so the audeience are able to see who will be featuring in the music video. We are going to be using the same people throuought so we have continuity. Our idea is that the camera will basically be following a group of friends on a average day out. We have also decided to take the music video into night time. We decided this because its just recently been holloween and bon firenight so we would like to include some scenes of fireworks and sparklers and possibly a couple of the friends carving a pumpkin.

During the evening scenes we may include the group of friends having a few drinks, we will use real bottles but, fill them up with water with food colouring or coke. We want alot of our scenes to portray the idea of bringing people together hence using scenes of a group of people singing ''Higher and higher and higher and higher!''. We think this will be really effective if we use a range of close-ups and mid-shots.

We really like these videos as they can be just random shots that reflect the type of music we are portraying. For example The Kooks song was laid back and there was footage of them on tour and messing about which can be quite interesting to see the band act normal instead of acting like pop stars in the video. The Nirvana one is an effect we would like to create, a home made looking video that is deliberately made to look homemade, as we do not feel that we would be able to create the high maintanance look of how most music videos look as we dont have the budget. The arctic monkeys one it s a great exmple for no singing example. We've decided to have some people singing in the video although it wont be the band itself singing. We would like a large group of people miming to part of the chorus ''higher, higher, higher, higher''. Throughout the song there is also some big drum beats and to emphsise this we have deicded to have a shot of someone playing the drums.

Song chosen: Passion Pits - Little Secrets

We chose this song bwecause we think its really ceatchy and one of thos songs that people would remember and have the tune stuck in their head. We were also able to imagine how we would like our music video to look as a lot of ideas came to us whilst listening to the song. The genre of music is electropop/Indie which gives off a really fun exciting vibe, which is what we want to come across in our music video.

Ideas for our music video:
One idea would make our video narrative based. We like the idea of having no band or artist singing to give it a more life like effect. This will give us advantages of not having to use the same people; we can have a variety of people in our video without affecting the continuity. The narrative will be based on a group of friends doing fun things together. For example, as these holidays are coming up, them out on Halloween, bonfire night with sparklers, hanging out and just generally having fun. Maybe go on a road trip/beach and show a bonfire scene.
Another idea we thought of was a performance based video where we would have group of boys miming along to the song and playing instruments used in the song. We would set them in stereotypical indie backgrounds like: in the school hall on the stage rebelling against school, at a disco where the main singer would be singing to the crowd etc.
The final idea would be to make our video concept based. We feel this would be a challenge as we would have to learn how to make our video cartoon-ised. It would be totally random with shapes, animals and vibrant colours used through-out. It would not include the band to make the video more mystical.
We will now send out a questionnaire with these 3 suggestions on to see which idea is the most popular.

The first camera shot is an establishing shot which shows that this music video is set in a hot country as there is sand on the floor and a women standing not wearing a lot of clothes, because it so hot. The instruments used also help to reflect where they are as a cow bell and maracas are used which give the songs a Spanish/ Latin feel. Justin then walks into a little bar where a lot of different camera shots are used to get a full picture of where he is such as close-ups and panning. After a few seconds you recognise that it’s a bar. There is a lot of women on sexual display as they are not wearing much clothing and seem to be playing up to the camera by sitting and standing in certain ways. Justin sit down next a women and looks over to the band playing which you can see are playing the music which is being used for the song. They all look really bored and the music seems very repetitive. As Justin walks up to the stage where the band are playing, there are a few more camera shots almost to remind the audience how boring the bar is at the moment so you can compare it to how lively it will probably be once Justin starts singing. The lyrics start ‘’ On that sunny day didn’t know I’d meet such a beautiful girl, walking down the street’’, at this point the camera cuts to a stereotypical Spanish women with dark skin, dark hair and eyes with a bright red dress on and bright red high heels. The women walks into the middle of the bar and starts dancing, you can see she is making a lot of eye contact with Justin as he is performing on stage and its as if she is dancing for his pleasure. This also means it is pleasing for other men to watch as there is lots of close-ups of her body and face. There is also a lot of close-ups of Justin’s face and body, this works well for him as a singer as a lot of girls find him attractive and by doing close-ups of him throughout the video, they are almost advertising him, meaning hopefully a lot more girls will buy his songs and watch his videos again. The camera then cuts to a shot of Justin dancing with a woman who has a lot of leg showing and this is emphasised by close-ups. Again this is used to entice men into wanting to watch this video. The fact that he’s dancing with a lot of different women also reflects his personality as Justin is known for being a ladies man, and because he is not focusing on one single women it doesn’t seem to make the young girls go off him as it almost shows he likes every type of women making them think that they might have a chance. He also calls them all ‘senorita’ which gives off the impression that he wants them to feel special as he also says ‘’ She deserves a crown, now hasn’t it been found?’’ this also helps him to be portrayed as man who respects women and just wants them all to feel special rather then a man with only one motive. This is again reinforced by his lyrics as a minute later the heavy beat stops and he sings ‘’ When I look into your eyes, I see something that money cant buy’’, that fact that the heavy beat stops gives it a more soft tone and more meaningful it also shows he has a lot of charm and knows how to treat a lady, making girls like him more and therefore he is more likely to get better sales.
There is then camera shots back at the pub with him performing you can see there is now a lot more people in the middle dancing and having fun. There is also a close- up of Justin having just looked at the all the people up dancing, having un he smiles and laughs showing he has achieved what he wanted to which is a much more lively place with men and women mixing together.
The ending of this song is very appealing as he gets the other people involved by making the men sing ‘ It feels like something’s heating up, can I leave wit chu?’’ and the women ‘’ I don’t know what im thinking bout really leaving wit chu’’ you can tell that when he sings this particular song live the ending would be really good as it would involve his audience and it also makes them all come together which is the main reason of this song, getting men and women together. His last words are ‘Gentlemen goodnight, Ladies….Good morning’’ which is quite humorous and again shows how he gets on well with women.

Kanye West- Heartless

The first opening scene of this music video you can see that they have decided to use animation, which kanye West has done before and I personally think works well with his style of music. The lyrics used in this music video are emphasised by the visuals for example ‘’In the night’’ , and the setting where he is looks dark and possibly like space as its got what seems to be lots of stars and ‘galaxies’. A bit further into the music video his lyrics again emphasised by the visuals, ‘’ How could you be so heartless?’’ , at th4e point of saying heartless the background turns from a blue to a red and as his voice echoes its as if the visuals are rippling in sync with his voice. The choice of colour is quite obvious as love is associated with the colour red and so is danger and fear and he’s singing about losing someone he loves to this work well. As soon as Kanye West starts singing you instantly recognise it as his song because of the voice as he tends to use synthesisers in certain songs, especially if it suits the songs well for example for this song it works well as it reflects how lonely he is because he is no longer with this women because it sounds quite echoy. Some more lyrics I found interesting significant was ‘’ He lost his soul to a women so heartless’’ , and again like he used before the visuals turn red and start moving towards the person watching the video almost as if he is shouting it and his sound waves are projecting at you. The word ‘heartless’ is repeated 3 times which is a good way to reinforce the meaning. Throughout most of the beginning scene there is a women above him and because of setting of the scene its almost suggesting she is his world because she is a lot bigger than his character which could also suggest she dominates him. The camera then cuts to a shot of him walking down a dark street all alone. The lyrics then become e a bit more fast paced and you begin to understand the story behind the song which is about a women who he’s lost but wants back even though they have both been horrible to each other he thinks it will work.
There are a lot of women used in this video which kanye’s character just walks straight past without a glance even though they are all wearing little clothing which shows his love for this women as he is not interested in any others. I have noticed throughout a lot of Kanye’s music videos he often uses his body to express a lot of passion and he uses it a lot in the particular video by using his hands and the way he moves which has been proved that people tend to do if they are really passionate about something. The next setting used is what looks like supposed to represent a club although you cannot see any objects that may suggest this there is a lot of flashing lights, some in beat with the music and a women who is dancing as if for show as she looks into the camera a lot. A heavy beat within the music also kicks in which gives the impression of being in a club as they often play very loud heavy bass music. The women dancing is another example of the many women in this music video being used for sexual display by wearing very little clothing with lots of close-ups of body parts.
The last setting to this music video is again on the streets but, this time looks as though it is supposed to represent New York because there is a lot of flashing lights from different shops. The difference is though the words flashing are intertexual references as they are advertising Kanye’s songs such as ‘’ Heartless’’ ‘’Love Lockdown’’ and ‘’Robocop’’ I think this is a very interesting way of advertising his songs as its almost like subliminal messages as because the lights are flashing on and off so quick it is quite difficult to work out what they actually say. He also uses words from the lyrics of this song or words associated with what the songs about, For example ‘’Heartless’’ ‘’Up 3 am’’ ‘’Nightmare’’ and ‘’Paranoid Place’’ this again is a very interesting way of reinforcing the lyrics but, I think it works well because it as if all the words are things going on his head and we are able to gain insight into what he’s thinking which I feel is the main object of a song as a song is a way of expressing yourself and this is what a lot of artists do. Lastly as the song is ending there is a shot of what looks to be the women who he loves, she looks back at him then walks towards the door as the door shuts the music ends abruptly which suggests he has just lost this women who he loves. The sudden ending gives it quite a dramatic ending and because of watching and listening to the song, as a audience you feel quite sad for it being a unhappy ending as there were true displays of Kanye’s character really loving this women and then the ending is that they don’t get back together which I think shows how powerful a music video can be especially when emphasising the lyrics.

Katy Perry- Hot n Cold

At the start of the music video there is an establishing shot of a church, the camera then zooms in and you can see that there is a wedding going on with Katy Perry being the bride and a man named Alexander is the groom. The vicar begins to talk, at which point there is a shot of the Katy’s bridesmaids. Straight away you notice that there a bit different from the normal as they are all dressed quite untidy and have different coloured dresses and there is also a man that is in a dress, holding a dog. I think this is typical of Katy as she is quite well known for her quirky dress sense and loud personality and this shines through with details such as this and her wedding dress is not the average you would often see.
The vicar then asks Alexander if he would like to marry Katy and there is a quick reaction shot and a zoom to his kneck where you can see he has just gulped so is clearly nervous, everyone begins to look at him .If you listen carefully you also notice the diagetic sound of birds tweeting has stopped, which reinforces the fact that something is not right.
Katy looks away then looks back at him which is when the music starts and she begins singing whilst everyone starts dancing. The church then turns almost into a disco as red lights start flashing in time with the beat, the use of red light is quite useful as most people associate this colour with fear and danger. Red is also used further into the video when Katy begins performing a song at a club, she is dressed in all read and there are again red flashing lights. As the chorus kicks in the choice of lyrics are interesting as she sings ‘ ‘Your hot then your cold, your yes then your no, your in then your out, your wrong when its right, its black and it white, we fight, we break up we kiss, we make up’ These lyrics are again amplifying the fact that it seems Alexander has changed his mind in wanting to marry her as all these are opposites.
There’s then a shot of Alexander being taken into a club by a few girls, he is then lifted up and starts ‘crowd surfing’, Katy then sings ‘ Now’s a dead battery’, and Alexander is dropped which is quite humorous as its like he’s being brought back down to earth. A crane shot is then used to give a view of the whole club which has a lot of red strobe lights and one main white light on Katy which looks as though it is used to show her importance compared to any of the other girls in the club.
Katy Perry uses quite a few dance routines throughout the music video and in one in particular she is the only girl who is wearing shorts and there is a few close-ups of her legs which is an example of scoprophilia, which is when a women or man is used for sexual display. In the music video I think it is used well as it means both men and women will watch the video as women will be interested in the music and men more in watching Katy herself. This will help her sales and I hope I can appeal to both mend and women as well.

I felt I should ask this question so that I could get equal results from both genders, which I will later be able to compare the rest of my results with for example I can see what the majority of boys like and dislike and equally what the girls like and dislike which I can then use to try and give them both what they like. I was pleased that I was able to get a equal amount of boys and girls to answer my questionnaire.

Again I asked this question so that I can see which age group prefer what so that I can get a good balance to suit a large group of people. I also wanted to find out what age group would be more likely to watch a music video on a daily basis so then I would be more likely to aim it on that particular group. I decided to only ask people aged 10-26+ as I feel these are more focus group and people much older than 26 are less likely to watch music videos therefore there opinion I felt would not be useful. I was really pleased with the amount of people I got for each age group as the people I feel I would most like to create a music video for I was able to gain a larger amount of information from.
